At the end of the year, Autoparts from Spain -a platform gathering around 30 Spanish suppliers of Automotion- assesses the progress during this year towards the climate neutrality goals set by the EU, which establish a CO2 emission reduction of at least a 55% for 2030 -compared to 1990 levels- with the objective to reach full climate neutrality in 2050.
“This proves to be a great challenge for the automotive industry, which should get quickly adapted to new regulations and develop sustainable technologies contributing to the sector’s decarbonization”, It is stated from the platform, outlining the important role of the automotive industry both for the transition to a more sustainable mobility and the manufacturing processes of such mobility solutions. In this sense, Autoparts from Spain reassures “all our members’ commitment to reduce environmental impact while the necessary move forward in the perspective of technology neutrality”.
In this line, the Spanish platform agrees with CLEPA’s thesis (European Association of Automotive Suppliers) which warn about the importance to review current regulations as essential to allow the coexistence of several viable technologies, efficiently contributing to decarbonization without limiting competitivity in the sector.
“Transition to a more sustainable mobility is a challenge which we face with determination and sense of responsibility. Spanish brands are at the forefront of implementing innovative solutions meeting with the European norms while providing an added value to our clients and the society as a whole. It is essential that we work ensemble both inside the industry and with authorities and regulators to achieve an effective decarbonization without compromising the sector’s competitiveness and innovation capacity” Mª Begoña Llamazares - Autoparts From Spain spokesperson and Sernauto’s CEO- states. she also agrees that “it is necessary a regulatory approach combining a climate ambition, with adequate volume and industrial strength, allowing that all decarbonization technologies complement electrification”. According to Llamazares, only in this way, ensure a sustainable transition which benefits the environment, the economy and the society would be possible.
Among the Spanish components manufacturers, companies as Enganches Aragon, ICER BRAKES and Fersa outstand because of their orientation to decisive decision-making regarding measures to face such challenges and contribute actively to decarbonization in the automotive industry.
An example of this orientation has been Antolin's commitment and its decarbonisation roadmap as part of the Company's commitment to the decarbonisation of the economy and the generation of value for the planet and people. The targets set for the reduction of emissions foresee the reduction of Scope 2 emissions by 2028, Scope 1 and 2 by 2040, and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. Antolin's decarbonisation strategy is linked to its business model and implements initiatives that reduce emissions in all phases of production and in the life cycle of its products, incorporating recycled plastic materials, as well as its commitment to promoting innovation and technological development aimed at the design of lighter and more efficient components, contributing to the energy efficiency of vehicles.
In the case of Enganches Aragón, over the last year, it has been working on three different lines related to decarbonisation. Firstly, they have installed self-consumption voltaic panels to save costs. In addition, they have managed to save 136,402 kWh per year and avoid more than 45,000 kilos of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere - the equivalent of planting 270 trees. Secondly, they have worked to achieve lighter couplings, thereby reducing their corporate carbon footprint and making the vehicles lighter. And finally, they have opted for transport solutions on ball hitches as they save battery and fuel consumption while driving, compared to roof bars.
At ICER BRAKES, sustainability is integrated into the core of its business strategy. Its brake pads are free of copper and heavy metals, ahead of strict international regulations, and thus contribute to cleaner mobility. Thanks to internal initiatives, they managed to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 27.6% in 2023 compared to 2021.
Fersa has set itself the target of achieving net zero emissions in Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030, and in Scope 3 by 2040. Through the Fersa Green initiative, decarbonisation is driven and a culture of environmental awareness is promoted, generating a positive impact on employees, partners and the environment. The company is working towards zero-defect and zero-waste factories, optimising resources and reducing their environmental impact.
In addition, these companies work closely with the value chain to develop sustainable solutions and promote sustainable practices that contribute to the decarbonisation of the sector.
Other Autoparts From Spain member companies, such as Gestamp, also join this collective commitment, developing their own initiatives to move towards a more sustainable and competitive automotive industry.
